This summer, Everesting world record holder and former professional rider, Ronan Mc Laughlin will embark on an extraordinary challenge: cycling over 2,200 kilometres around Ireland’s rugged coast, reaching all four cardinal points and traversing major segments of the Wild Atlantic Way in less than five days.

In a bold initiative titled “Traces,” Ronan’s journey is not just a record-breaking athletic feat; it’s also a heartfelt campaign to highlight the struggles faced by the food allergy community. This cause is deeply personal for Ronan, whose daughter, Sophia, was born with a severe food allergy that complicates daily family life. By undertaking this monumental ride while avoiding common allergens such as nuts, peanuts, sesame, and eggs, Ronan aims to bring to life the daily obstacles that millions face.

The Challenge: A Journey Across Ireland

Ronan's route will take him through a variety of landscapes, from the rugged cliffs of the Wild Atlantic Way to the tranquil coastal paths, ensuring that Ireland’s beauty serves as a fitting backdrop for his mission. Spanning five challenging days, this ride represents not just a personal test but also a platform to advocate for those who manage severe food allergies every day.

With each pedal stroke, Ronan will experience the distinct elements that characterise Ireland's coast.

According to recent data, the incidence of food allergies has escalated, with hospitalisations due to severe allergic reactions doubling over the past decade. In this context, Ronan aims to provide a raw perspective on the difficulties that countless families face, further emphasizing the need for greater awareness and understanding in our communities, especially in sports and nutrition.

Ronan Mc Laughlin: A Profile of Achievement

Ronan’s illustrious career showcases numerous record-breaking achievements. In 2021, he set the Everesting World Record, climbing a total of 8,848 meters faster than anyone else. His record rides from Dublin to Derry in 2022 and from Mizen Head to Malin Head in 2023 further display his dedication and endurance.

As he prepares for "Traces," Ronan blends his exceptional talents with a crucial cause, demonstrating how athletes can leverage their platforms for social good.

Food Allergies: A Growing Concern

The rise of food allergies is a growing issue that many families confront daily. More than 170 foods are recognised as potential allergens, turning meal times into sources of anxiety instead of nourishment. For example, studies show that about 32 million Americans have food allergies, with children being particularly vulnerable.

Ronan aims to ignite discussions about these pressing issues by emphasizing the need for significant changes in food labelling, ingredient transparency, and allergen management in food preparation. His challenge is a call to action that can inspire conversations leading to meaningful reform in both the food and sports nutrition industries.
